Ecology

Prior to taking an interest in minerals, my background in scientific illustration dealt almost exclusively with ecology. With a background in Medical Illustration, many of these early illustrations are anatomical. However, my more recent work mostly captures the surrounding landscape, and the flora and fauna found in Arches and Canyonlands National Park. Below are some examples of illustrations created for the Navtec Expeditions Field Guide Book: used to provide supplemental material for guests, and train new guides in naturalist identification. Currently undergoing updates for later editions. Images are typically vector-based, with some raster shading.

Included in this book are over 100 different species of local flora and fauna, including some of the ones shown.

In addition to this work, I have worked with Palentolgists to illustrate their research on dinosaur tracksites in the surrounding moab area:

Other Scientific Illustrations were created as a researcher illustrator at the Ohio State University, where I worked with a graduate lab group to increase the publicicity and advocacy for their work.

Below: the article “Global Plant Diversity Hotspots” by Tara Pelletier was illustrated, selected as cover image for PNAS: (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) 2019

Other publications include: NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), the Society of Systematic Biologists. In addition, illustrations have been made for MSU (Michigan State University) and as a histology teaching aide at OSU. Finally, numerous other examples are available which have been produced through independent work.
